About Coach Jay
Jason Matthews is a Los Angeles native who originally hit the athletic scene as a baseball pitcher. Burned out, he switched to basketball at age 14. Despite the rather late start to the sport, he quickly captured the attention of college basketball recruiters with his dedicated training regime and consistent performance in one of the most competitive regions nationwide.

While at St. Monica Catholic, Jason earned the accolades of All-Westside, All-CIF, Westside Player of the Year, Hoop Scoop Top 50, and Honorable Mention McDonalds All American. His offensive production increased each year averaging 15 points per game (ppg) as a sophomore, 26 ppg as a junior, and 28 ppg as a senior.

‎The MAIN FOCUS for young players should be, first learning the fundamentals of the game...  and second implementing those fundamentals in their daily workout in the correct manor.
Jason was heavily recruited. Ultimately it was John Calipari (now head coach of Univ. of Kentucky) who convinced Jason to join the University of Pittsburgh and a very special recruiting class. Alongside Darelle Porter, Bobby Martin, Sean Miller (now head coach of Univ. of Arizona), and Brian Shorter; these freshmen went on to be named one of the all time Top 5 Recruiting Classes in NCAA history. Jason held NCAA, Pitt, and Big East records for 3 point field goal percentage and free throw percentage. Jason was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team and was selected 3 times to the All-Big East Team. Scoring over 1800 points at the University of Pittsburgh, Jason ranks #6 on Pitt’s All-Times scoring list.

During his sophomore year summer, Jason was invited to try out for the USA Basketball Team in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center. He made the team, helping the team to win the Silver Medal in Mexico City at the Tournament of the Americas, a qualifier for the 1992 Olympics.
After graduating, Jason was invited to the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago. In 1991 he played in the NBA Summer League for the Los Angeles Lakers, earning a contract and invitation to Lakers Veteran Camp. In 1992 he accepted an invitation to play in Summer League for the Milwaukee Bucks. Then international basketball came calling, and Jason joined the Philippines Basketball Association.
Since then basketball has remained Jason’s passion. In 1993 he started working out players individually to improve their game. He also coached YMCA Youth basketball leagues, inspiring kids by promoting the fundamentals and sportsmanship. In 2013 Jason started coaching high school basketball at Barack Obama Academy in Pittsburgh. While working with the kids, he ensures the parents are also educated about the necessary steps in their child's plan.

Jason co-created the Pittsburgh Basketball Combine in 2016. This invitation-only event showcases the best high school talent in the region. Drawing coaches and recruiters, the Combine...now in its 2nd season...features basketball measurements, skill work, and competitive 1-on-1/ 5-on-5 play.

Through his long term relationships nationwide with top coaches, Jason is shining a spotlight on Pittsburgh players which translates to scholarships. Several 22 Hoops players are now being seen by and ultimately receiving offers from D1 schools.

Jason will be expanding 22 Hoops to Tampa, Florida in 2017.
